“Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms. Markle’s parents,” the royals said in a statement.
A spokesman at Windsor Palace told CNN that Queen Elizabeth II and her husband “delighted” for Harry and Markle, and “wish them every happiness.”
Harry’s older brother, Prince William, also looked outside of British aristocracy to marry Catherine, now duchess of Windsor, in 2011. William and Kate said they were happy for Prince Harry’s engagement.
“We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together,” they said in a statement.
Harry and Markle were first photographed as a couple in September, when they attended the Invictus Games in Toronto, Canada. Invictus, started by Prince Harry, is a tournament for wounded and injured armed services veterans to compete in sports like wheelchair basketball, and sitting volleyball.
Markle is co-star of “Suits” on the USA Network, and was previously married to American film producer Trevor Engelson. The two were married in 2011, and divorced three years later.
