Police brought up an Illinois teacher on drug charges Monday after her students recorded her snorting lines of cocaine inside her classroom.

Police arrested 24-year-old English teacher Samantha Cox last week after her students provided footage of “a teacher ‘snorting’ a line of an illegal substance” to the school principal, the Chicago Tribune reported. Police brought in a search dog which found more cocaine in the drawer of Cox’s desk. She faces a felony charge of cocaine possession and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

“We are concerned and saddened by the recent incident, and we have recognized that it is a systemic issue in our country,” school board President Janice Malchow told the Tribune. “Lake Central has provided parent information sessions for the past two years; in addition, through various formats LC has provided our students an awareness of challenges that they might encounter. We believe in open communication about the issue. It takes a village to battle this ugly demon.”

Cox admitted to police that she had purchased $160 worth of cocaine before driving to school the morning of her arrest, saying she typically waited until after school to buy drugs, but “was feeling sick and needed to get some.”

It is unclear whether Cox is still employed with the school, but superintendent Larry Veracco claimed the county took “swift and forceful action.”

Cox is is likely facing a fine of up to $25,000 and a sentence of up to three years in prison. Illinois law penalizes anyone in possession more than 15g of cocaine with up to 15 years in prison, but having only spent $160, it is unlikely that she was in possession of more than 5 grams.

Cox posted a $945 bond and is awaiting trial.
