A college voted Tuesday to dole out $500,000 for a “Social Justice and Gender Equity” center.

Dr. Nancy Grass, dean of student life at Santa Monica College, led the initiative to establish the half-million-dollar center, $60,000 of which would be dedicated to a “computer lab update,” reported Campus Reform.

“The administration is basically demanding that the student government spend more money on anything that it has in the entire history of [Santa Monica College], all at once, without any significant discussion,” said Lee Peterson, supervisor of the school’s computer lab, speaking to The Stringer.

The center will now have “a Safe Space for Undocumented Students, DACA Students, LGBTQ+ Community, Religious Practice, and many more,” according to Ben Kolodny, vice president of Santa Monica’s Small Gov Club.

More than 300 students have signed a petition authored by Kolodny calling the center “a huge waste of student resources.” But Associated Students president Jennifer Chen asserts that the renovation will come with additional computers and printers for students to use.

The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to Santa Monica for comment, but received none in time for press.
