Sen. John McCain of Arizona revealed what he wants on his tombstone and how he is feeling in the wake of a likely fatal cancer diagnoses.

The 81-year-old Arizona senator was diagnosed with stage 4 glioblastoma in July, a rare form cancer that typically takes an individual’s life within 14 months of diagnosis.

“I have been so fortunate to have the life that I have had, full of time and adventure and excitement,” McCain told People Magazine in an exclusive interview.

“I’ve been a small bit of American history, so I think if there’s something on my tombstone, it’ll be ‘He served his country,’ and hopefully you add one word, ‘honorably,'” McCain said. “I’ve made a lot of mistakes. I’ve lost races. I’ve caved in to what seems to be the easy way out and wasn’t. There’s nothing to be sorry for. I have nothing but gratitude for a life fully lived, and you can’t ask for anything more than that. And you can’t deny that I am the luckiest person that you will ever talk to.”

McCain’s daughter, Meghan, got married on Nov. 21 after a hurried engagement in the wake of his cancer diagnoses. McCain said he was happy to see his daughter get married, calling the wedding “a celebration of life and a chance to revisit and celebrate the past.”

The Arizona senator has no plans to retire, despite currently undergoing cancer treatment. McCain’s cancer was found after a surgery in mid July to remove a two-inch blood clot above his left eye.
