The Trump administration has come up with a plan to replace Secretary of State Rex Tillerson with CIA Director Mike Pompeo, The New York Times reported Thursday.
White House chief of staff John Kelly reportedly developed the transition plan and has floated it to other White House officials. Kelly is timing the transition to be around the end of 2017 or at the beginning of 2018.
Tillerson and President Donald Trump’s relationship has taken a turn for the worse in recent months. The secretary of state and the president have disagreed over the future of American foreign policy and a number of other issues.
Tillerson reportedly called the president a “moron” in October, a comment that he does not explicitly deny.
The White House is also looking to fill Pompeo’s vacancy with Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, who has become a close ally of the president in recent months. Cotton is reportedly advising the president on appointments and various matters of national security, like the U.S. policy towards Iran.
