Vox Media decided to nix plans to have an open bar at its upcoming Christmas party out of concerns of potential “bad behavior,” according to a Thursday company email.
In the midst of numerous male media figures facing sexual harassment accusations, Vox Media told employees that they will receive two drink tickets each to tamp down on potential harassment, reports The Huffington Post.
“And instead of an open bar, each attendee will receive two drink tickets with which they can get alcoholic drinks if they choose. After that only non-alcoholic drinks will be available,” the email sent to New York staffers said, noting that the decision apparently came after requests from staffers to limit the alcohol served.
The company also noted that while limiting alcohol may not fix sexual harassment, severely limiting the flow may help stop it. “We recognize that even though alcohol isn’t always the reason for unprofessional behavior, creating an environment that encourages overconsumption certainly contributes to it,” the company said.
Vox Media has not been immune to the recent wave of sexual harassment allegations against men in power. The company fired its editorial director in October after a woman accused two company higher-ups of inappropriate behavior and Lockhart Steele said he had engaged in such conduct.
The company did not return The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment in time for publication.
