The hashtag “#BoycottSanFrancisco” began trending on social media Friday morning following a Thursday night verdict where a San Francisco jury found an illegal immigrant accused of killing Kate Steinle innocent on murder charges.

Illegal immigrant Jose Ines Garcia Zarate shot and killed  Steinle, 32, on July 1, 2015 when she was walking with her father on Pier 14, a popular waterfront attraction in San Francisco.

“I greatly respect our jury system, but I could not disagree more with this verdict,” Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell of California tweeted Thursday. “I pray for Kate’s family.”

President Donald Trump also shared his disgust with the jury’s conclusions, calling them “a complete travesty of justice.”

The Steinle case sparked a nationwide debate over immigration policies and became a fixture of Trump’s 2016 campaign.  Many supporters for greater enforcement against illegal immigration saw the case as a prime example of the dangers of so-called sanctuary cities.

San Francisco is considered a sanctuary cities, meaning local law enforcement does not cooperate with federal immigration officers nor will they enforce federal immigration law.

Steinle’s killer was a convicted felon and five-time deported Mexican citizen.
