Two military dogs were set to be put down in Britain because they had no homes to go to, but a 400,000-strong petition saved them from euthanasia.

Military dogs Kevin and Dazz, who served in Afghanistan on multiple tours, were on their way to a sure death by lethal injection when British Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson informed their handlers Monday morning that everything would be done to find them a home, Sky News reports.

Outrage about the dogs’ impending demise erupted over the weekend after Special Air Service soldier Andy McNab started a petition to save the animals, which obtained an incredible 400,000 signatures.

According to McNab, service dogs had saved his life “on numerous occasions.”

“We have a duty to save them,” McNab added. “In Afghanistan when I was on a patrol the dogs found an IED in front of us, I was number three in line, I was very, very lucky to survive.”

In Afghanistan, the dogs were responsible for sniffing out improvised explosive devices.

They are currently housed at the Defence Animal Centre.

Many dogs unfortunately are not able to be retrained from time spent in combat environments and are put down. Other dogs suffer illnesses like arthritis. But it appears that in this case, Kevin and Dazz will get a second chance at life after serving in Afghanistan.
