Navy midshipmen held signs mocking their West Point counterparts Saturday for graduating an admitted communist during the annual Army-Navy football game.

The signs read “Not Communist” and “Communism Won’t Win.” Midshipmen also reportedly started chanting “Communists” when West Point cadets would try and get a motivational chant going.

The midshipmen’s target was current U.S. Army Officer 2nd Lt. Spenser Rapone, an avowed communist and West Point graduate who posted photos online showing him touting his belief system at his graduation ceremony.

Rapone at different points on social media denigrated Secretary of Defense James Mattis as an “evil, vile f***,” and called convicted leaker Army Pfc. Chelsea Manning an inspiration.

Rapone’s social media presence may have also been a violation of article 88 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which states “any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.”

Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida called for Rapone to lose his military commission in early October, and noted he should be required him to pay back his tuition costs.
