A pro-life woman was arrested and jailed for setting foot on the premises of an Ontario abortion clinic, the media reported Monday.

The 43-year-old Canadian pro-lifer Mary Wagner went to a Women’s Care Clinic in Ontario on the morning of Dec. 8 carrying roses and a contact card with the words, “You can keep you baby. Love will find a way,” as well as information about the religious group, “Sisters of Life.”

Shortly after, police arrived and dragged her out of the building with her hands cuffed. Wagner was not yelling, chanting, or loudly protesting but simply offering cards to women entering the clinic.

Police charged Wagner with one count of mischief and two counts of breaching probation. Wagner was arrested in Dec. 2016 for vocalizing the pro-life message and has been to court multiple times since then. She refused to accept bail for Thursday’s arrest because she said she “cannot in conscience agree to the condition to stay away from abortion centers.”

Abortion is legal in Canada, and any woman possessing a valid Ontario health card can have a free abortion at a hospital or clinic. Hospitals and clinics in Canada can choose to establish their own policies and practices limiting abortion services, but Canadian law puts zero limits on abortion until birth.

Wagner did avoid charges under Ontario’s Bill 163 — the “Bubble Zone” law — that bans pro-life protesters from coming within 150 meters of the province’s eight abortion facilities, because Ontario’s government has not finalized the implementation of the law following its Oct. 26 passage.

“These are real children and mothers who are every day in danger,” she told LifeSiteNews in an earlier interview, explaining why she feels she has a duty to impart her message of protecting life to prospective mothers entering the clinic.

Wagner will be forced to sit in jail until her trial, that is not expected to occur for several months. She is scheduled for a preliminary court appearance on Dec. 21 that could change the duration of her jail sentence.
