Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said Tuesday that he isn’t planning on leaving Washington “anytime soon,” a statement that is in direct contrast to rumors that Ryan is planning on stepping down in 2018.

“I’m not going anywhere anytime soon, and just let’s leave that thing at that,” Ryan told reporters Tuesday.

Ryan reportedly told his Republican colleagues in a closed-door meeting Tuesday that it doesn’t make sense for him to step down when the GOP is “winning and has the momentum.”

However, Politico reported in early December that “Ryan has made it known to some of his closest confidants that this will be his final term as speaker.”

Ryan took over for former Speaker John Boehner in 2015.

The House is expected to pass the most extensive rewrite of the tax code in 30 years Tuesday morning. Ryan has spent his decades-long career in Washington dedicated to reforming the tax system and deregulating the economy.
