Voters prefer Democrats to be seated in Congress over Republicans by 18 points, the largest advantage of any poll taken so far this year, according to a study CNN released Wednesday.

The poll, commissioned by CNN but conducted by SSRS, shows that 56 percent of registered voters say they “favor a Democrat in their congressional district, while 38% prefer a Republican.” These numbers also show the largest advantage by a party in a midterm election cycle going back two decades.

Democrats hold a massive advantage with Independent voters as well; 51 percent of Independents say they want Democrats to control Congress, while 35 percent say they prefer Republicans.

CNN’s findings match a general pro-Democratic trend found by other pollsters. Polling aggregate site Real Clear Politics currently shows Democrats with a 12.5 percent advantage over Democrats in their 2018 Generic Congressional Vote average. The current average has not yet factored in the CNN poll.

The CNN poll also finds a significant enthusiasm gap between the two parties. Forty-nine percent of Democrats or Democratic-leaning Independents say they “are extremely or very enthusiastic about voting for Congress next year, compared with 32% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independent voters who say the same,” according to CNN.

Republicans are counting on the recent passage of their tax bill to help regain support by voters. CNN’s poll was done before the bill’s passage, and nonpartisan analysts have concluded that more than 80 percent of Americans stand to benefit from a tax cut.

While the president’s party usually suffers during midterm elections, CNN’s numbers signal a difficult election season ahead for the GOP.

The poll was conducted from Dec. 14 to Dec. 17 with a sample size of 1,001 adults and a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percent.
