GOP Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona said Sunday morning that the people attending rallies for President Donald Trump are the “spasms of a dying party.”
“When you look at some of the audiences cheering for Republicans, sometimes, you look out there and you say, ‘Those are the spasms of a dying party,'” Flake said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”
The outgoing senator elaborated on what he feels is a party facing an existential crisis. Flake believes the Republican platform is catering too much to “older white men.”
He feels the party is governing through “anger and resentment,” a philosophy he says is unsustainable.
Flake believes the president may alienate enough Republican voters in 2020 that he will invite a GOP challenger.
“I do believe if the president is running for reelection, if he continues on the path that he’s on, that that’s going to leave a huge swath of voters looking for something else,” Flake said.

The senator announced he would not seek re-election in 2018 in late October.
Flake has found himself at constant odds with President Donald Trump on issues ranging from immigration to the president’s support of former Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore.
