Meghan Markle was on the shortlist to become the next “Bond girl” before her relationship with Prince Harry became public and the couple later announced their engagement.

The producers of “Bond 25” were impressed with Markle’s role as Rachel Zane on “Suits” and were reportedly eyeing her to play one of the British spy’s love interests in the upcoming movie, Page Six reports. However, the producers eventually marked her off the list due to her then-budding relationship with Prince Harry which they believed would make her “unattainable,” according to The Sun.

“Meghan fits the role of a Bond girl perfectly. She’s glamorous and sexy and a good actress,” a film source told The Sun. “The role more recently has gone to actresses deemed to be rising stars, and Meghan certainly was seen as that before her relationship with Harry became public.”

According to sources the role was meant for a “glamorous rising star” of either American or Canadian nationality. Markle fits the description perfectly. (SLIDESHOW: 18 Times Meghan Markle Already Looked Like Royalty)

“Producers had narrowed down her and four other actresses on a shortlist last year with ‘Bond 25’ in mind. But the minute her relationship to Harry came to light they assumed she was out of the running so it soon became a list of four,” a source revealed. “Her engagement effectively spelt an end to her acting career too so that was the final blow.”

Shortly after the Prince of Wales and Markle announced their engagement, the 36-year-old actress revealed that she would be stepping away from acting. Being a “Bond girl” is a big deal, but it’s not quite as big as becoming a member of the British Royal Family.
