Vice President Mike Pence’s weeklong stay in Aspen, Colo. was interrupted by politically-minded neighbors, who hung a rainbow colored “Make America Gay Again” sign at the bottom of his driveway.

Pence’s holiday neighbor hung the colorful banner on a stone column that stands at the foot of the driveways leading up to the two homes Wednesday or Thursday, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Buglione told The Aspen Times Friday.

“You couldn’t miss it,” Buglione said of the banner that stands off Owl Creek Road. He added that the neighbors responsible for the sign had been very accommodating of the Secret Service agents and deputies stationed at the foot of the driveway, bringing them corn muffins and chili after hanging their sign.

Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo said one of his deputies witnessed the sign being posted.

“He was real sheepish and thought he might be confronted by the Secret Service or deputies who’d tell him he couldn’t do it,” DiSalvo said. “When they said, ‘We’re not here to control your free speech rights,’ they came out with chili and began feeding them.”

Pence arrived in Aspen Tuesday with his family and plans to depart Monday.

The neighbors did not immediately respond to The Aspen Times’ request for comment, but one woman, who claimed responsibility for posting the sign, reached out to correct Dissalvo’s comment.

“(The banners) were actually hung by the daughters of the couple who live in the home, and one of their girlfriends (I’m one of them!) with the full support of their parents,” Shannon Slade wrote in an email to The Aspen Times.

Pence, a staunch Christian conservative, eliminated legislative protections for the LGBTQ community during his tenure as Indiana Governor, but later backtracked, signing an amendment to the law codifying certain limited protections.

Trump once joked that Pence, who opposed the repeal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, “wants to hang” all gay people.
