A Guardian writer said that the Church of Satan “got cool” thanks to Chelsea Clinton and others’ media attention, proposing the religion as the “spiritual antidote to the Trump era.”

Stuart Jeffries claimed that progressive politics and social media promotion like Clinton’s New Year tweet has made Satanism a popular movement for young, anti-Trump liberals, especially artists. Jeffries lamented Clinton’s denial of practicing satanism, and said he hoped that her denial wasn’t real, just “like her father’s denial of having had ‘sexual relations with that woman,'” despite the fact that her level of popularity likely did not help Satanism’s appeal.

“Doesn’t she realize that the radical power of Satan is having a moment unparalleled since Milton unwittingly made him the badass rebel hero of Paradise Lost?” Jeffries wrote.

Jeffries claimed that attention from Clinton and other media figures, along with satanism’s self-perpetuated media presence, caused a spike in the occult religion’s popularity among counter culture artists and progressives, especially in California. He cited an LA Times article explaining the evolution of the satanic movement and its newfound popularity “as a community-based response to the Trump era.” The article describes a gathering of satanists in California, noting that their brand of satanism was “much more feminist than nihilist, flexibly self-aware and better versed in internet culture than orthodox theology.”

Jeffries praised the LA Times’ description of modern satanism, and wrote that while older iterations of satanism garnered fear and suspicion for being dark, abusive occult movements, he believes the newest form is commendable as a far less obscure, more progressive, feminist answer to a world run by men. He suggests that for those who abhor the alleged horror that President Donald Trump represents, embracing satanic ideals and worship of the demonic may be the very solution they desire.

“Satanism’s latest mutation is something else, a contrarian uprising against a patriarchal world order that deserves its comeuppance. How inspiring to find that in 2018 satanists are more progressive than the Great Beast even now tweeting diabolically from the Oval Office,” Jeffries wrote.
