Sorry, Joe Biden, but after Oprah Winfrey’s widely-celebrated speech at the Golden Globes Sunday night, it looks like she’s already leading the 2020 Democratic presidential primary.

When accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award toward the end of the show, the legendary television personality, actress, and businesswoman made such an impression on the audience both there and with viewers across the country, that many political reporters immediately began speculating about a potential Oprah presidency.

No one went as far as NBC — which tweeted from its official account a gif of Oprah at the Golden Globes, captioned with, “Nothing but respect for OUR future president. #GoldenGlobes.”

Politico’s Playbook also cited the L.A. Times’ Libby Hill who wrote the following:

Winfrey for president was something of a running theme throughout the Golden Globes on Sunday, beginning with Seth Meyers’ opening monologue. He jokingly forbade Winfrey from considering the presidency. But the trend picked up steam as the night unfolded, particularly after Winfrey’s impassioned acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

The morning newsletter added its own commentary as well, saying that while Oprah “has said she’ll never run for public office,” there’s nothing stopping her from doing it now. Similar to Trump, Oprah is a billionaire. And, after all, “quite frankly, there isn’t any clear Democratic favorite that would clear the field at the moment. Don’t count someone like her out.”

It looks like Winfrey’s longtime partner, Stedman Graham, agrees. When asked about a potential 2020 run, he told the L.A. Times that “It’s up to the people,” but that “she would absolutely do it.”

A Public Policy Polling survey from last March asked Americans their thoughts on a potential Oprah Democratic candidacy in 2020 against Trump. The poll found that 47 percent of Americans would back the female billionaire tv star, while 40 percent would support the current billionaire tv-star-turned president.
