A notorious neo-Nazi leader was sentenced to five years in federal prison for illegally possessing an unregistered destructive device and for unlawful storage of explosive material, on Tuesday after a Justice Department prosecution, according to a press release from the agency.
Brandon Clinton Russell, 22, received his sentence after a joint investigation by the FBI and Tampa Police Department. Russell is the founding member of the white supremacist group “Atomwaffen,” according to the Department of Justice.
“Russell, an active and founding member of a neo-Nazi group, was sentenced today by a federal judge after he unlawfully possessed and stored dangerous explosive materials in his home,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General for National Security Dana J. Boente. “This case is but one example of the National Security Division’s resolve to identify, disrupt and prevent terrorist threats, whether domestic or international.”
Tampa police responded to a double homicide in May 2017 at an apartment where Russell was living with the alleged shooter and victims. Both the alleged shooter and victims were members of “Atomwaffen” with Russell.
After law enforcement was tipped off about Russell, they discovered a cooler in his garage containing the explosive HMTD (Hexamethylene Triperoxide Diamine) and other bomb-making materials. Russell admitted to making and purchasing the materials, as well as belonging to the hate group when interrogated.
