CNN’s Chris Cuomo pushed back against Democratic Congressman Keith Ellison and said if the government were to shut down it would be on Senate Democrats, Wednesday on “Cuomo Prime Time.”
Ellison said President Donald Trump had promised a clean bill on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and believes it is the responsibility of Democrats to continue pushing Trump to force him to have the “courage of his convictions.”
“You’ve got your own crisis of conviction,” Cuomo said. “Because if the Democrats play this out the way they might on the Senate side, and the government gets shut down — and theoretically it’s on you because those would be the votes that aren’t there.”
Ellison strongly disagreed and pivoted to bipartisanship and compromise, and chastised Republicans for holding the issue of immigration hostage.
“No, no. I wouldn’t agree. Here’s the thing, Chris,” Ellison said. “This city is built on compromise. you have to work it out. You can’t say, we’re going to take a position that you don’t agree with, but we need your votes.” He added:
Therefore, surrender your position, or else we shut down the government. That’s what we call hostage-taking. We don’t believe in it. We don’t do it. We say, we’ll go along with something we’re not even happy with as long as we get some things we have to have. That is the way Washington is supposed to work.
“They’re saying, you do it our way or we’re going to shut down the government and then blame you for it. That’s not going to work, Chris and I think the American people see right through it,” Ellison concluded.
