Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn said Tuesday he is glad Democrats came to their senses and voted to reopen the federal government, but claimed they are still holding vital military, national security and disaster relief funding “hostage.”

“Thankfully, the Democrats realized the mistake they made in shutting down the government over this unresolved issue of DACA but they have kept additional hostages and those hostages are the money that should be appropriated to the rest of the fiscal year to support our military and to give picked ability to our nation’s national security,” Cornyn said.

“Also, they are holding hostage the money that house passed, $81 billion for disaster relief for the victims of Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey, as well as the wildfires out west. I hope the Democrats realized that we are serious in working on a bipartisan solution to the DACA situation, the majority leader has said that we will take that matter up in a fair and open process and we will,” Cornyn said.

“In the meantime, that they took on the DACA issue and let them go so we can fund our military and so the federal government can live up to its responsibility in dealing with victims of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Maria.”

Senate Democrats shut down the government over the weekend in an effort to get Republican leadership to cave and include legal protections for DREAMers and members of their families into the continuing resolution. (RELATED: Watch Illegal Immigrants Rage At The Capitol)

House and Senate lawmakers were able to come to an agreement on a short-term spending bill that will keep the government open through Feb. 8 and will provide a six-year funding extension of a highly popular children’s health program. President Donald Trump signed the bill into law Monday evening.
