Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas hit back against President Donald Trump’s commitment to provide roughly 800,000 illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship, calling the president’s move “inconsistent” with the Republican’s immigration platform.

“I do not believe we should be granting a path to citizenship to anybody here illegally,” Cruz said Thursday at the Capitol. “Doing so is inconsistent with the promises we made to the men and women who elected us.”

While Cruz did not use Trump’s name, his comment Thursday comes under 24 hours after the president told reporters he is considering a 10-12 year pathway to citizenship for the roughly 800,000 recipients of the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“We’re going to morph into it, it’s going to happen over a period of 10-12 years,” Trump said Wednesday evening at the White House in reference to a potential pathway to citizenship for DREAMers.

“If somebody’s worked hard, if they’ve done a great job, it gives you an incentive to do a great job,” Trump said. “They’ve worked hard, They’ve done terrifically, whether they have a little company, or whether they work, whatever they’re doing, if they done a great job, I think it’s a nice thing to have the incentive after a period of time to become a citizen.”
