A local French grocery chain’s 70 percent discount on Nutella has lead to violence across France, as shoppers find themselves unable to contain themselves at the thought of a cheaper dessert spread.

Intermarché supermarkets dropped the price of Nutella from 4.50 Euro to 1.40 Euro, causing fights and scuffles and eventually leading to a police response in order to restore order.

“They are like animals. A woman had her hair pulled, an elderly lady took a box on her head, another had a bloody hand,” one shopper told a French media organization.

At one store, all Nutella was sold out in 15 minutes, while one customer left with a black eye. Violence in other stores were described as “riots.”

Stores had to ration the discounted jars at a market near Toulouse to one per customer. Intermarché said it regretted the violence.
