A number of Democratic strategists and progressive activists believe that Cecile Richards should consider running for office after she retires from her position as president of Planned Parenthood.
A report from BuzzFeed News lists a number of “Democratic officials and longtime campaign hands” that the abortion-rights advocate should try her hand at higher office, considering her popularity among the Democratic Party’s base.
“She would be an amazing candidate if she wanted to run,” Washington State Rep. Pramila Jayapal told Buzzfeed at a liberal State of the Union event title “State of OUR Union.”
Activists like Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza also expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of Richards entering public office.
“Fuck yeah she should run for office!” Garza said at the same event. “We’ve basically made a whole plan for her campaign without her.”
Some Democratic politicians think Richards would be a shoo-in, with California Rep. Barbara Lee telling Buzzfeed that she’s “sure that [Richards] would win and that she would be great,” echoing the same opinion of Sens. Cory Booker and Tim Kaine who both reacted positively to the idea.
Despite the encouragement from various Democrats, it’s unclear where Richards would run. A native of Texas, Richards began her career in politics working for Texas Governor Ann Richards’ campaign — but now currently resides in New York City.
Given the machine-like nature of New York Democratic politics and Texas’ current status as a Republican stronghold, Richards will likely have to go to a state where she has little connection.
No worries, however, according to political consultant and former New York State Democratic Party executive director, who thinks Richards would do “great” running for Senate in a “rep or purple state.”
