Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith is headed to Washington after the team reportedly has reached an agreement to trade their five-year veteran starter, sources told the Kansas City Star Tuesday.

According to the report, in return for the trade with the Redskins, the Chiefs will get a third-round draft pick this year and cornerback Kendall Fuller.

However, any trade involving Smith can’t officially be completed until the first day of new league year on March 14 at 3 p.m. Sources added, despite that fact, the deal is set and will definitely happen.

The Chiefs QB was entering the final year of his contract with a cap number of $20.6 million for 2018. By making the trade, they could save $17 million.

Smith had a strong year with career highs in passing (4,042) and touchdowns (26) with a passer rating fo 104.7 and five interceptions all season.

The deal also clears the way for the 2017 first-round draft pick, Patrick Mahomes, to become the teams starting QB. Mahomes debut on December 31 during the regular season lead to a 27-24 win for the Chiefs over the Denver Broncos. He completed 22 out of 35 passes for 284 yards and one interception.

The trade all but confirmed that Kirk Cousins is on his way out of Washington.
