Trump Administration Aims To Keep US Dollars From Supporting International Abortion Orgs
The U.S. State Department announced Wednesday it has a policy in place to prevent taxpayer dollars from going to foreign non-governmental organizations (NGO) that support abortion, keeping in line with the Trump administration’s pro-life stance.
“The Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance (PLGHA) policy aims to ensure that U.S. taxpayer funding does not support foreign NGOs that provide or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning,” the State Department tweeted Wednesday.

The policy follows an initial review by the Departments of State, Defense, and Health and Human Services, along with the United States Agency for International Development, seeking to develop a more detailed guidance of its implementation. The administration notes that it will conduct another review of the policy at the end of 2018.
The Trump administration said Wednesday that only four international organizations have refused to accept new rules according to ABC News. Abortion organizations, Planned Parenthood and Marie Stopes International, are among the list of decliners.
The policy follows Trump’s reinstatement of the “Global Gag Rule” otherwise known as the Mexico City Policy, which requires that overseas organization receiving U.S. aid do not promote abortion. Former President Ronald Reagan first established the Global Gag Rule in 1984. Following former president Barack Obama’s rescinding the policy in 2009, Trump re-established the policy in 2017 upon taking office.
“The United States continues to work on behalf of American taxpayers as a leader in addressing global health issues—a healthier world means increased safety and prosperity for all,” the State Department’s message concludes.
