Baltimore activists are cautiously celebrating the city going 10 days without a homicide after they launched a ceasefire weekend earlier this month.

The city, usually plagued by gun violence and homicides, hasn’t seen one in the past 10 days since Feb. 2, reports The Baltimore Sun.

“I am losing my mind thrilled,” Baltimore Ceasefire organizer Erricka Bridgeford told The Baltimore Sun. “It’s really exciting. Baltimore deserves this boost of love.”

Bridgeford and her organization launched another ceasefire weekend on Feb. 2, urging people to put down their guns and stop shooting each other. The group has had similar weekends in the past, but they were marred with homicides. This time, the work seems to paying off, though Bridgeford cautions people from attributing the stop to just her group’s effort.

Despite the lack of homicides, the city has seen about five non-fatal shootings.

The city has tried to enact certain changes in their attempts to crack down on the violence. Mayor Catherine E. Pugh, a Democrat, fired former city Police Commissioner Kevin Davis because the homicide rate continued to climb during 2017, eventually reaching 343 killed during the year.

“Crime is now spilling out all over the city, and we’ve got to focus,” Pugh said of her decision. “I am charging [De Sousa] and his staff to get on top of it to reduce the numbers and to reduce them quickly.”
