Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas did not shy away from defending gun rights Thursday in the wake of the tragic Parkland shootings, arguing for protecting law-abiding citizens’ Second Amendment rights and targeting criminals who are violent perpetrators of gun violence.

Cruz appeared on stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Thursday to discuss how Republicans should maneuver their way through the ongoing gun control debate in Congress after 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people at a Florida high school on Feb. 14.

Democrats and members of the media have re-invoked the gun control debate, calling for raising the minimum age for purchasing a rifle, limiting magazines and other more drastic measures. Cruz said these proposals are all too familiar and do not address the heart of the problem: Keeping guns out of the hands of criminals.

“It is an amazing thing and its tiresome. Every time you see a horrific crime, people in the media and Democratic politicians immediately jump on it to push their agenda…stripping Americans of their Second Amendment Rights,” Cruz told a group gathered at CPAC.

Simply put, Cruz said that if Democrats had their way, we would be “confiscating” all the guns in the nation.

“It is profoundly unconstitutional and it doesn’t work. Everyone who saw the shooting in Parkalnd—it is horrifying. It is perfectly reasonable to have a conversation, but the left’s answer is always, always, always strip Americans of their gun rights,” Cruz said. “What does work is putting felons and criminals in jail.”

Cruz said one proposal, which President Donald Trump floated Wednesday at a press conference, that could help out in such tragic shootings is having teachers and school officials conceal carry.

“I think it makes perfect sense. I don’t think you should make teachers do that, but if they are comfortable in being able to defend themselves that is a good thing,” Cruz said.

The Texas senator got the biggest round of applause when he spoke about how to target young Americans.

Cruz made references to lower taxes, a freer economy, a free internet in reference to repealing net-neutrality and a host of other issues that resonate with millennials.
