President Donald Trump praised the National Rifle Association and its president Wayne LaPierre after publicly breaking with the organization on the issue of a federally mandated minimum age of 21 to buy a firearm.

Trump, just an hour before, broke with the NRA who came out strongly Wednesday against the idea of raising the minimum purchasing age to 21 from 18. “Passing a law that makes it illegal for a 20-year-old to purchase a shotgun for hunting or adult single mother from purchasing the most effective self-defense rifle on the market punishes law-abiding citizens for the evil acts of criminals,” NRA spokeswoman Jennifer Baker said in a statement.

The law would essentially deprive “them of their constitutional right to self-protection,” she continued.

Trump appeared to endorse armed teachers in schools in a series of tweets Wednesday.
