Lamar Jackson has reportedly not signed with an agent, and his mother will be taking care of his NFL preparations.

Sporting News writer Eric Galco broke the news last Friday, but it went relatively unnoticed at the time. Galco tweeted, “I’ll just leave this here: Per the NFL official SRA list, QB Lamar Jackson does not have an NFL agent representing him. No matter what your thoughts on agents are, that’s notable. And potentially concerning…For the record, this is Lamar Jackson’s choice. His mother is aiding in his NFL Draft preparation. NFL teams do care about who a player signs with and how they handle the process.”

This is a terrible idea. Absolutely terrible. How has nobody gotten into Jackson’s ear to let him know how awful this plan is?

Agents have a specific job and it’s a highly skilled one that’s necessary to compete in the NFL. What makes anybody think the mother of the Heisman winner is somehow qualified to handle the affairs involved with the NFL draft and contracts? Lamar Jackson was an outstanding college player, but he’ll need serious help to boost his draft stock. He’s got all the talent in the world, but not everybody agrees.

You know who could help sell that idea? A professional agent who makes millions by promoting and fighting on behalf of players. You know who isn’t qualified to do that? A player’s mother.

This is going to be an unmitigated disaster if somebody doesn’t intervene. Jackson needs to open his eyes and realize just how horrific this path is. Sign with a superstar agent right now, and don’t let your mother be involved in a single way.
