After Conservative columnist Mona Charen was booed at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) for criticizing French politician Marion Maréchal-Le Pen, MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” quickly gave her an open arms welcome Monday morning.

Host Joe Scarborough referred to Charen’s mention of Roy Moore at CPAC and praised her for calling out the GOP. “If you go back and listen, what really was like — she crossed the Rubicon when she actually went after Roy Moore,” Scarborough chuckled.

Axios co-founder Jim VandeHei and “Morning Joe” guest turned the conversation to immigration, and said Republicans need to realize they are not living in “1950s America” and must embrace Hispanic immigrants if they want to survive as a party. Charen was then prompted to share her thoughts on illegal immigration.

She indirectly bashed President Donald Trump for combating illegal immigration from a criminal standpoint and claimed illegals are less likely to commit crimes than American citizens.

“I think it is perfectly fair to have a debate about immigration. I think people who believe that we need to take a pause or who believe that we’re not assimilating immigrants as well as we could, they have a good case to make and they deserve to be heard,” Charen said. “But to treat it as a matter of crime, which is a complete falsehood, immigrants are much less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans. To treat it as a matter of xenophobia, it’s just morally wrong.”

“I don’t think it’s wrong to have a civilized debate about immigration as long as you don’t demonize people,” she concluded.
