A small Thai village is dressing up men as women to ward off evil spirits after five healthy males mysteriously died in their sleep in the last few weeks, according to a report Tuesday.

Men are now going to sleep in women’s clothes and makeup after five able-bodied males died while sleeping in a small village of the northeastern province Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, reported the Daily Mail. Villagers believe the reason for the mysterious deaths is from a widow’s ghost who is seducing and taking the souls of men in the neighborhood. This started in February.

The small village of roughly 90 people is trying to prevent the deaths at all costs by employing other superstitious practices. Villagers are wearing all red and placing large penis statues with a red tip outside their homes. They aim to project masculinity through the statues and protect themselves from the ghost window. Some frightened neighbors also made signs saying that “there is no man here” and put scarecrows also dressed in red outside their homes.
