Former White House strategist Steve Bannon called the Russians “bad guys” Wednesday and thinks it is time for the U.S. to reset its relationship with the former Soviet nation.

“The Russians are bad guys. They’re not Pilgrims. But I’ve argued from day one that we ought to try to reset the relationship with Russia. Eventually we have to end the Cold War, right,” Bannon told GQ Wednesday. “Clearly, in the highly politicized atmosphere we have now in Washington, D.C., that’s not going to happen.”

“Trump says this perfectly all the time. ‘Hey, we got enough enemies. Why is everybody pushing me to be more belligerent with this guy,'” Bannon said.

For roughly 14 months, special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election has consumed the media, members of Congress and the public discourse.

President Donald Trump and his administration are adamant there is no evidence of collusion between his campaign and Russian agents, an assertion that Democrats and pundits continue to question as Mueller’s investigation continues to unfold.

Bannon said Wednesday that Russia is a nation with an economy the size of the state of New York and its time to stop treating them with the same fear the U.S. did during the Cold War ear.

The former Trump aide said the U.S. focus should rather be on emerging super powers like China.
