Democratic West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin praised President Donald Trump for bringing “sanity and order” to the gun control debate on CNN’s “New Day” Thursday, then quickly pivoted to praising himself.

“Well, I’ve never seen [Trump] more determined and willing to do whatever he needs to do in order to try to bring some sanity and order to this whole gun issue,” Manchin said. He then said his gun bill would have passed years ago if more Republicans had supported it.

“We didn’t have enough of my Republican friends, but we had some. We introduced that bill. The NRA, we tried to talk to them. We tried to work with all parties, not just them, everybody involved, and thought we had something that would be basically something that would be — basically something that can move forward. And then that went for naught. We lost that.”

Manchin continued to pitch his gun control legislation and said it was the most vetted Congressional bill in the last five years.

“The Manchin-Toomey bill has been vetted more than any bill in the last five years,” he said. “It makes sense. We closed down the loopholes. You want to talk about all the guns people are wanting to ban, everything people are wanting to do, it’s all for naught if you can’t have a background check and knowing who shouldn’t be able to buy a gun.”

Manchin said Trump supports the bill and feels the White House and Congress can come together and reach a deal on gun control legislation.

“The president embraces that. He likes the bill. We’re going to work with him and his administration to see if that’s going to be the base bill they want to work off of,” Manchin concluded.
