“The Shape of Water” won Best Picture at the 90th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday night. The movie made history by being the first science fiction film to ever win the biggest prize in cinema.
The movie also won best original score, best production design and best director. Guillermo del Toro’s win for best director is the fourth win for a Mexican director in the last five years.
Though the movie was well reviewed, and had won several awards en route to the Academy Awards, it’s still surprising to see the Academy honor a genre that has generally been looked down on. “Three Billboards” and “Get Out” were also highly touted going into the night.
