MSNBC anchor Andrea Mitchell and former Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta whined on Wednesday that Podesta’s leaked emails distracted from anti-Trump media coverage in the 2016 election.

Mitchell noted during an interview with Podesta that his emails leaked “only minutes after the Access Hollywood tape,” referring to the tape that showed then-candidate Trump discussing groping women.

“Late on a Friday afternoon,” Podesta chimed in.

Mitchell asserted that it was “unusual” for the DNC and Podesta emails to be leaked early in the morning, bemoaning the fact that they became a central part of the election news cycle.

“And just to set the context, both of those Wikileaks dumps were early in the morning to drive the news cycle in the U.S.,” Mitchell continued. “So, unusual from the get-go and you guys noticed it right away.”

“Absolutely, and I think it was done to try to divert attention to give the anchors on Fox News something to talk about other than the Access Hollywood tape,” Podesta added. “And I think that the question is whether there was coordination between the campaign and Wikileaks, at least through intermediaries, about the timing of the release.”

Mitchell further suggested that the timing of the email release could be proof that Russia worked through Wikileaks to undermine the U.S. election.
