A gunman who claimed allegiance to the Islamic State and took hostages at a supermarket in southern France was shot dead by police after killing multiple people, according to several outlets.

The attacker, reportedly a Moroccan national known to authorities, stole a car in Carcassonne Friday morning, the Telegraph reported. He killed the driver and then opened fire on a few cops out for a jog before moving on to a Super U supermarket in Trebes. The gunman is said to have shouted “Allahu Akbar, I’ll kill you all” as he entered the supermarket, according to Reuters, citing Trebes Mayor Eric Ménassi. The incident at the supermarket, which is believed to be linked to the earlier incident, is being treated as a terrorist attack.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack via its Amaq news agency.

Police confirmed that the attacker killed three more people, including a police officer who traded places with one of the hostages, at the supermarket and injured around a dozen others.
