Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Beast John Avlon praised President Donald Trump for his expulsion of Russian diplomats Tuesday on CNN’s “New Day,” saying it was a move that deserved credit.

“The Trump team deserves credit for this,” Avlon said. “This is tough, substantive action against Russia as part of a multilateral coalition to punish them for poisoning folks on foreign soil. That is a good step forward. And it’s three times the number of diplomats that Britain expelled, almost. This is big and it deserves credit.”

Avlon quickly pivoted, however, and said Trump’s actions didn’t go far enough, calling for the seizure of assets belonging to Russian oligarchs.

“The problem is that continuing disconnect,” Avlon added. “When toughness on the administration from the Pentagon and relative sounds from the president. And that still has to be explained because the president’s criticized his own attorney general and the senate majority leader more than he has Vladimir Putin. That speaks to a larger problem.”

“This action is tough, it is decisive,” Avlon concluded. “The way it could go further as David said is for particularly the United States and Britain to start seizing oligarch’s assets– that would really be tough action. Because a lot of them are kept overseas and that’s something they’d have a tough time retaliating against. That would get their attention in a different way.”
