Former Republican governor of California and movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger underwent emergency heart surgery Thursday night and is now in stable condition.

Schwarzenegger’s surgery was to replace a catheter valve which developed complications requiring the rush operation. The former governor reportedly has a history of congential heart problems and underwent an aortic valve replacement 20 years ago.

BuzzfeedNews noted that Schwarzenegger issued a 1997 statement describing his heart problems saying “choosing to undergo open-heart surgery when I never felt sick was the hardest decision I’ve ever made,” adding  “I can now look forward to a long, healthy life with my family.”
