Former Trump campaign adviser Michael Caputo thinks the president changed his mind on DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) because he felt Democrats were “playing politics” with the issue.
“I believe the president wants to create a final solution for the people who were under the DACA ruling. I think that he wants a solution that as he said, is one of love,” Caputo said on CNN’s “New Day” Monday. “I believe he would do that if the Democrats would come around.”
“He believed that [DACA] would be overturned in the courts. So he cancelled it and said let’s get-together and fix this thing for good. And yet we haven’t been able to do it,” Caputo added.
Caputo said Trump changed his strategy because Democrats weren’t taking his good faith proposals seriously and felt he had to act on his own.
“The Democrats, in his mind, and I think in mine as well, have been playing politics with DACA all the way along,” Caputo concluded. “They’re not giving the president, conceding to the points that the president wants. He controls the White House and the administration. The Republicans control the Senate and the House. The Democrats are acting as if this is their time. It’s not. They have to compromise to get a solution for DACA.”
