Roughly 18 illegal immigrants suffered from injuries Saturday after being involved in a California car crash, as they were possibly being smuggled into the country.

An F-250 pickup truck crashed while carting a four horse trailer early Saturday morning on a San Diego County highway, The San-Diego Union Tribune reported.

The horse trailer began to skid, leading the pickup truck’s driver to lose control of the car, according to a woman driving behind the truck and trailer. The trailer eventually separated from the truck and flipped onto its side.

Various witnesses on the scene saw people escaping from the trailer and trying to run away, they told California Highway Patrol officers. CHP requested Border Patrol agents to come and help; the two teams were able to find about eighteen people from the crash.

Most of the injuries were not life threatening, but two women were flown to a nearby hospital. Four men were driven to a hospital as well.

Authorities are still unsure where the group entered the country illegally.
