New York Governor Andrew Cuomo sent a strange tweet Tuesday for “Equal Pay Day,” a day meant to promote equal pay for men and women.
Gov. Cuomo tweeted:
Today on #EqualPayDay we know that the issue is not only shattering the glass ceiling but also lifting women up from the sticky floor.
That’s why I’m introducing legislation to institute a salary history ban, to help close the gender wage gap. https://t.co/aXlNHpeXnm

It’s unclear exactly what this tweet meant.
Cuomo sent a few other tweets to commemorate the day. (RELATED: #EqualPayDay Is All About Women. Here’s How That’s Unfair)
A low salary can trail a worker for an entire career, so that is why we are proposing a law to ban private and public employers from asking applicants about their salary history. #EqualPayDay pic.twitter.com/xQkrsxNg0N

The steps New York has taken to close the gender pay gap are working — but 89 cents is still not good enough.
New York State is making equal pay a priority, and we won’t stop until the pay gap is completely eliminated. #EqualPayDay https://t.co/TStnz0p9mS

The gender pay gap can follow women their entire careers. By banning salary history, we can break the weight of this unfair, unequal cycle and work to achieve fair pay for all women in this state. #EqualPayDay pic.twitter.com/LI2WHdz6ud
