GOP Rep. Luke Messer of Indiana wants to end the practice of financial bonuses for sanctuary cities and claims his bill would crack down on illegal immigration.

“Our bill was designed to stop the illegal immigrant bonus that sanctuary cities and towns get under current law,” Messer said on “Fox & Friends” Wednesday. “Here’s why they get a bonus. Federal programs that are based on calculations of population look at total population, which under the census includes illegal immigrants.”

Messer, who is also running for a Senate seat, said he is happy with President Donald Trump’s efforts on immigration thus far, but believes Congress can do more to prevent taxpayer dollars from falling into the hands of illegals.

“The president has said we are going to have a citizenship question on our Census. That is great progress. But now we need to give that some teeth. And that’s what my bill does. It would require that any population calculations used for allocation of federal dollars, not include illegal immigrants,” Messer said.

“It should just be taxpayers. It’s crazy that these communities literally get a financial bonus for having illegal immigrants and we need to stop it.”

Messer accused Democrats of being part of the problem and called them the “party of illegal immigration.”

“The Democratic Party is becoming the party of illegal immigration in this country,” he concluded. “They get more funding in these communities when they have illegal immigrants. They also get more members of Congress too.”
