The city of Boston came to a complete stop for a day to witness the spectacle of the 122nd Boston Marathon Monday.

The race has always been an emotional experience for the runners, and since the tragic 2013 marathon bombing, it has become an even more poignant day for the city of Boston.

This year, despite the brutal conditions of wind and rain, the marathon still went on with emotions running high. Desiree Linden became the first American women to win the race since 1985, and on the men’s side, six out of the top 10 spots were American runners.

Linden, who finished two seconds later than the winner in 2011, made a major comeback with her winning time this year.

So, if that doesn’t explain just the small bit of emotions these runners feel in the grueling race, check out the 10 most emotional pictures of the Boston Marathon.

It truly is an amazing day in American life.
