CNN’s Chris Cuomo jumped at the chance to defend former Trump adviser Sam Nunberg on “New Day” Monday, despite mocking him for appearing drunk on-air in March.

Cuomo was interviewing New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman about an article she wrote Friday discussing the possibility of lawyer Michael Cohen flipping on President Donald Trump to cut a deal. Trump had a negative reaction to the piece and began tweeting in response. One of his tweets claimed Haberman was using non-existent sources and “a drunk drugged-up loser” to slam Cohen.

Haberman and Cuomo believe the “loser” to be Nunberg and defended him despite previously ripping on him in March.

“This is a man who has pledged to take the opioid crisis real. To treat addiction in a way no president has before. We know he has to be talking about Sam Nunberg,” Cuomo said.

“Should he be held to account, the president of the United States,” Cuomo continued. “For referring to somebody as a drugged up drunk when he says he wants to give attention to addiction?”

“Yes we should [hold Trump to account],” Haberman replied. “He was very good at going to events and sort of sounding a note of compassion. Calling someone a drugged up loser on Twitter and especially then creating this kind of who is it, is it Sam Nunberg, is it someone else? That is the opposite and that is something that people who have been working in the field of addiction for a long time have been trying to push back against.”

“This is how [Trump] really feels about addicts,” Haberman concluded. “He had a brother who died of alcoholism. We know that he considers addiction to be weak. Whatever he says to people when he is either dealing with people who have lost children as he did recently in New Hampshire, to opioids, or when he is trying to sound he is focused on this crisis that is very revealing to say what he said.”

Cuomo mocked Nunberg back in March and said, “If the guy had a pet monkey on his shoulder, he would be more legitimate. Can’t make it up. Can’t make it up.”
