White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders offered a statement of condolences to Canada after a lethal van attack in Toronto Monday.

“The United States stands with the Canadian people in the aftermath of today’s tragic event in Toronto, where a van drove into a crowd of people killing several and injuring many more.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those affected, and we wish a full recovery to those injured,” Sanders said. “The United States Government pledges to provide any support Canada may need.”

10 civilians perished in the attack with several more wounded. The suspect is thought to be mentally ill with no connections to terrorism and at one point tried to get a responding police officer to kill him. Eye witnesses described his actions as intentional.

“Shoot me in the head,” suspect Alek Minassian pleaded with a police officer after his van crashed.

He eventually surrendered without further incident.
