A student group cancelled an immigration talk after a Canadian university hiked the security cost by nearly 1,800 percent Wednesday, five days before the event’s April 30 date.

The University of Waterloo in Ontario raised security costs for the immigration talk from $1,600 to $28,500, reported The Record. The Laurier Society of Open Inquiry subsequently cancelled the event, which would have featured former The Rebel Media contributor Faith Goldy and University of New Brunswick professor Richard Duchesne, author of “Canada In Decay: Immigration. Diversity, and the Ethnocide of Euro-Canadians.”

“Apologies to everyone who was planning on attending, there is no way we can pay that,” the society’s president, Lindsay Shepherd, said. “We are going to cancel the event.”

Shepherd, a Wilfrid Laurier University graduate student, previously made headlines for getting scolded by her school after showing a debate featuring University of Toronto professor Jordan Peterson to a class she was teaching in 2017. Wilfrid Laurier assigned the Society of Open Inquiry “health and safety” requirements, causing the society to decide to relocate the event to Waterloo, where it would need to charge attendees $20 for admission. (RELATED: University Assigns ‘Health And Safety’ Requirements To Student Group’s Events)

The society previously hosted Goldy at Wilfrid Laurier in March, an event cut short when an unidentified attendee pulled a fire alarm. For the April event, the University of Waterloo purportedly told the society that it did not need to know for what precise security aspects the $28,500 fee was needed.

“We do not provide operational details of our security,” University of Waterloo spokesman Nick Manning told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “Costs would have included uniformed officers as well as security guards to prevent disruption such as triggering fire alarms.”

“This wasn’t about security, it was about sabotage,” Goldy told TheDCNF. “My talks on university campuses are being deliberately targeted because of the Marxist Left’s intimidation by rioter’s veto, which is nothing more than a show of counterfeit force to mask their fear that I might actually awaken students through fact-based arguments and debate.”

The commentator expressed resilience and said next time, “None of their tactics will get in [her] way.”
