House Speaker Paul Ryan was among those missing from the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, but he sent a video along to make sure his presence was still felt.
Most of the video, which was just over two minutes long, was in the playful spirit of the evening. Ryan joked about spending the evening updating his LinkedIn pageant “chilling out” with former House Speaker John Boehner. “Something to do with grass, I don’t really know.”

But Ryan finished with a serious note for the young scholarship recipients who dream of one day becoming journalists. “Know that what you do matters. There’s so much noise out there, but our Republic does not work without an informed electorate. Pay attention to the policy, not just the personalities. Look at the human impact, not just the horse race. But above all, challenge yourself to challenge us, those of us in public office.”
