Protesters are planning to celebrate “Star Wars” Day, May the 4th, with a lightsaber rally In Washington, D.C.’s Dupont Circle. The rally is to commemorate the failed Republican efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act and to inspire protesters to continue the fight against further efforts.
The event, posted on Facebook by Health Care Voter, is described on the planning page.
A year ago, on May 4, 2017, the House of Representatives voted to pass the Republican health care repeal bill, which would have stripped health care from millions of Americans. It didn’t make it through the Senate, but thanks to the continuous cruel and vicious efforts of Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress, our health care is still under attack. We have to fight back by holding elected officials accountable for their attacks on the things we need for survival.
The Health Care Voter’s Twitter account shared the event, which actress Alyssa Milano then promoted.
If you’re in the D.C. area, join the Resistance this #StarWarsDay by being part of the Lightsaber Rally to Defend Health Care!
Lightsabers will be provided, so what are you waiting for? https://t.co/Z6vbTUJ5D5 pic.twitter.com/VZQkfrUeVX

DC friends — on May the Fourth, health care advocates are gathering in Dupont Circle to join a Lightsaber Rally to Defend Health Care. When the Empire attacks our care, we will rise up to defend it. https://t.co/fuBw8QHM3V

Multiple Republican efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act failed over the last year, but the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act — passed just before Congress’ Christmas recess — was successful in removing the individual mandate.
