Michigan opened seven more sexual abuse cases not related to Larry Nassar, according to Meridian Township police Wednesday.
Police are passing seven sexual assault cases to a special prosecutor in the wake of the Nassar scandal, according to ESPN. There are about 600 separate sexual assault cases over the past 17 years that are unrelated to Nassar, said Dave Hall, the police chief from Meridian Township. Authorities are concerned they overlooked past reports of alleged sexual misconduct.
Police previously received a case in 2004 from Brianne Randall-Gay who claimed that she was sexually abused by Nassar during a doctor’s appointment. The case was later dismissed after Nassar defended his actions and duped the police by claiming that they were legitimate medical practices.
Randall-Gay gave a statement during a news conference to help work with police officials to acquire better tools to investigate sexual assault allegations Wednesday, the Lansing State Journal reported. Police officials previously gave Randall-Gay a formal apology Feb. 1 for not following through on her sexual assault allegations against Nassar.
Hall also noted that more than half of his full staff of 41 police members attended training sessions to better investigate sexual assault allegations.
