Today is the 14-year anniversary of Pat Tillman appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated following his death in Afghanistan.

ESPN’s Darren Rovell tweeted out a photo of the cover, which features the iconic image of Tillman yelling while holding his helmet.

The former Arizona Cardinals star safety was killed by friendly fire in 2004. He enlisted in the army after the terrorist attacks on 9/11, and became an Army Ranger.

Pat Tillman’s legendary career and life is something all Americans should learn about. It’s an example of a man who knew there were larger things in this life than just football.

Many pro athletes only think about themselves. They’re all about the flash and attention. Tillman gave himself to a cause much greater than himself. He gave up superstardom and lots of money to fight in Afghanistan. It’s pretty crazy to think about. I can’t imagine a superstar athlete right now just dropping out of the NFL to fight in a war.

Times sure have changed, but we’ll never forget the sacrifice and legacy of Pat Tillman.
